Abstract

The paper covered preparation, characterization of Mg-Al-Co hydrotalcite based catalysts including hydrotalcite and ordered mesoporous hydrotalcite (mesohydrotalcite) for their applications in decarboxylation of jatropha oil. The hydrotalcite and mesohydrotalcite catalysts were prepared through co-condensation and co-condensation-evaporation methods, respectively, followed by post-treatment processes such as filtering, dry and calcination at suitable temperatures for reasonable times. The application of these catalysts showed a higher activity of the mesohydrotalcite catalyst because of its ordered mesoporous structure, high specific surface area and well concentrated pore diameter, compared to that of the hydrotalcite catalyst. However, the green diesel fractions obtained from both the decarboxylations showed good characteristics for becoming the blending component with commercial diesel fuel.
