Abstract

This study develops a cycloaliphatic epoxy (EEC)/PACM composite reinforced with amorphous SiO₂ for treating annular casing pressure (ACP) in oil and gas wells. The epoxy equivalent weight of EEC, measured by HBr/CH3COOH titration, was 190.06 g/eq, yielding a stoichiometric EEC:PACM mass ratio of 100:27.67. Four formulations (ES0–ES3) varied SiO₂ content (0, 5, 10 wt%) and 2-ethyl-4-methylimidazole (2E4MI) accelerator (0, 2 phr). Materials were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM and DSC/TGA; rheology, thickening time and compressive strength were assessed at 110 °C, 47 MPa using a Fann Model 35, HPHT consistometer and UCA. Formulation ES2 (5 wt% SiO2 + 2 phr 2E4MI) proved optimal within the range studied, with a thickening time of 4h40 matching miocene squeeze operations and a 24 hour compressive strength of 19.7 MPa, nearly four times that of neat epoxy (5.1 MPa). These results support the composite as a promising alternative to conventional cement and polymer gel systems for ACP remediation.
