Abstract

The synthesis of crystalline porous metal–organic framework (MOF) Cu(BDC), a potential material for catalytic applications, was investigated in this study using the recycled terephthalic acid as ligand. To prepare the material for the reaction, 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (terephthalic acid-H2BDC) was firstly recovered from waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) provided by waste plastic drinking bottles. The recovery of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol from PET was done by saponification. Particularly, PET pieces were heated in sodium hydroxide solution for production of ethylene glycol and sodium terephthalate. Several reaction parameters including temperature, time and concentration of sodium hydroxide have been studied. It was found that the optimum amount of sodium hydroxide was 10 gram per 10 gram of waste PET while the operating temperature and time were 180 oC and 70 mins, respectively. Then, the synthesis of Cu(BDC) was carried out between H2BDC and Cu(NO3)2.3H2O using solvothermal approach. The obtained Cu(BDC) MOF was characterized by various techniques, namely X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). In addition, the synthesized Cu(BDC) was used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the cross-coupling between phenol and 4-chlorobenzaldehyde.
